Romans 13
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake
out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore
cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of
light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness,
not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for
the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
1. KNOWING THE TIME - The
Apostle Paul takes for granted that we know the time.
DO YOU KNOW TH
E TIME?
Because we know the time we understand we cannot put the things
that matter off to a later time but
11 And do this, understanding the present time.
The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because
our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. NIV
11 But make sure that you don't get so absorbed and exhausted in
taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track
of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. MESSAGE
11 Another reason for right living is that
you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for the coming
of our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. NLT
N O W
2. IT IS TIME TO AWAKE OUT OF SLEEP
- We cannot afford the simple luxury of rest. Jesus said to his
disciples at the most crucial moment of his life - "Can
you not stay awake and pray?"
WE MUST BE AWAKE IN THIS HOUR!
12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost
here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor
of light. NIV
12 The night is about over, dawn is about to
break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the
finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed.
MESSAGE
12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation
will soon be here. So don't live in darkness. Get rid of your evil
deeds. Shed them like dirty clothes. Clothe yourselves with the
armor of right living, as those who live in the light. NLT
3. The reason we must be awake in
this hour:
NOW IS OUR SALVATION NEARER THAN WHEN WE FIRST BELIEVED.
4. THE NIGHT IS FAR SPENT
- Nighttime is about over.
The day is at hand because the day is breaking.
We must be prepared.
As morning arrives we prepare for the day so we have prepared for
that day.
THE COMING OF THE LORD DRAWETH NIGHT!
BECAUSE:
- The night is almost over
- The beginning of the day is imminent
5. THERE ARE FIVE THINGS WE SHOULD
DO:
A. Cast off the works
of darkness (deeds of darkness - NIV)
(Get rid of your evil deeds. Shed them like dirty clothes) -
NLT |

Ephesians 6
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places.
Galatians 5
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:
of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in
time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit
the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather reprove them.
1 Thessalonians 5
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should
overtake you as a thief.
1 John 1
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and
declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness
at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in
darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1 John 2
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother,
is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there
is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh
in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that
darkness hath blinded his eyes.
I'm talking about casting off the works of darkness.
