The Day Is At Hand

Printer Friendly Version

Romans 13
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

1. KNOWING THE TIME - The Apostle Paul takes for granted that we know the time.

DO YOU KNOW TH E TIME?

Because we know the time we understand we cannot put the things that matter off to a later time but……………

11 And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. NIV

11 But make sure that you don't get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. MESSAGE

11 Another reason for right living is that you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for the coming of our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. NLT

N O W

2. IT IS TIME TO AWAKE OUT OF SLEEP - We cannot afford the simple luxury of rest. Jesus said to his disciples at the most crucial moment of his life - "Can you not stay awake and pray?"

WE MUST BE AWAKE IN THIS HOUR!

12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. NIV

12 The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. MESSAGE

12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So don't live in darkness. Get rid of your evil deeds. Shed them like dirty clothes. Clothe yourselves with the armor of right living, as those who live in the light. NLT

3. The reason we must be awake in this hour:

NOW IS OUR SALVATION NEARER THAN WHEN WE FIRST BELIEVED.

4. THE NIGHT IS FAR SPENT - Nighttime is about over.

The day is at hand because the day is breaking.

We must be prepared.

As morning arrives we prepare for the day so we have prepared for that day.

THE COMING OF THE LORD DRAWETH NIGHT!

BECAUSE:

- The night is almost over
- The beginning of the day is imminent

5. THERE ARE FIVE THINGS WE SHOULD DO:

A. Cast off the works of darkness (deeds of darkness - NIV)
(Get rid of your evil deeds. Shed them like dirty clothes) - NLT

Ephesians 6
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Galatians 5
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

1 Thessalonians 5
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

1 John 1
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

1 John 2
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

I'm talking about casting off the works of darkness.

B. Put on the armour of light

God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. MESSAGE

Clothe yourselves with the armor of right living, as those who live in the light. NLT

C. Walk honestly……….
  Not in:
1. Rioting
2. Drunkenness
3. Chambering
4. Wantonness
5. Strife
6. Envying

Romans 13

13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. NIV

13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. NASB

Luke 21
34 "Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; NASB

Galatians 5
21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. NASB

1 Peter 4
3 For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. NASB

13 We can't afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. MESSAGE

13 Let us live and conduct ourselves honorably and becomingly as in the [open light of] day, not in reveling (carousing) and drunkenness, not in immorality and debauchery (sensuality and licentiousness), not in quarreling and jealousy. AMP

13 We should be decent and true in everything we do, so that everyone can approve of our behavior. Don't participate in wild parties and getting drunk, or in adultery and immoral living, or in fighting and jealousy. NLT

D. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ

Romans 13
14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ NIV

14 Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about! MESSAGE

14 But let the Lord Jesus Christ take control of you, NLT

E. Do not make provision (allowance) for the flesh to satisfy the desires of the flesh.

Romans 13:14

and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. NIV

and make no provision for [indulging] the flesh [put a stop to thinking about the evil cravings of your physical nature] to [gratify its] desires (lusts). AMP

and don't think of ways to indulge your evil desires. NLT
