Four Nails That Changed The World

Printer Friendly Version

Isaiah 22
22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.
24 And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
25 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Colossians 2
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

John 20
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

I want to minister this morning on "The 4 Nails that forever changed the way that God ministered to a lost world"

Jesus told His disciples:

Matthew 16
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Acts 1
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The ministry of Jesus Christ was coming to a close and each of these 4 Nails beckons to us to

Take up where He left off. We are being called today to extend His ministry.

N A I L S 1 & 2

The first two nails were placed in Jesus' hands:

They are to remind us that since His hands were nailed, we are to be His hands.

HIS HANDS:

Touched lepers and healed them

Mixed spit and clay to give sight to a blind man

Divided the bread and fish to feed thousands

Picked up children and gave them object lessons

Threw down the tables of the money changers driving them from the temple

Wrote forgiveness in the sand

Were seen by Thomas the doubter

His hands were nailed to the crossbeam, being nailed to a criminal cross.

No longer do those hands caress the cold body of death.

No longer does His hands cuddle little children

His hands no longer touch the sick, the hurting and the dying.

BUT:

OUR HANDS:

Are called to bear the marks of the cross

Are called upon to clap before the Lord

To go beyond the stained glass windows and reach stained lives

He calls upon us to reach out and touch somebody

Hands that care, hands that caress, hands that help

Not very many people in Morgantown care about the details of our lives enough to pick up their cross and follow Him.

We often talk about changing the world, but do not want to change ourselves.

We enjoy the comfortable, the routine. We hold on to the old.

Too often we don't like change but we will never change others until we change ourselves.

What else can be said about the cross; the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ that hasn't been said.

It is the most preached about passage in the Bible.

We know He paid the supreme sacrifice for our sins.

He took the sins of the whole world upon Himself.

The whole scene prior to His death, the pain, the agony, the shame…..

How embarrassing it must have been.

Jesus said 7 things while He was on the cross:

1.

To those who condemned Him and hung Him on the cross "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."
2. To the thief, "Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise."
3. To Mary, John will take care of you, "Behold your son."
4. To John He charged with the care of His mother, "Behold your mother"
5. Hanging on the cross for hours without complaining he said, "I thirst"
6. As the debt for all mankind was paid, in John 19:30 he cried out, "It is finished"
7. Lastly, He looks up and says, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

4  N A I L S  T H A T  C H A N G E D  T H E  W O R L D:

With 4 nails He passed the torch of earthly ministry from Himself to His followers.

BEFORE THE CROSS:
Jesus was the one who healed the sick,

He was the one who fed the hungry.

He sought out the lost, no matter what it cost Him in popularity,

He taught us to pray,

He told us to love those who hated us.

There are very few unsaved in Monongalia County this morning that could care less about how the choir sings,

There are very few people in West Virginia today who want to know how good our prayer meeting are,

There are very few in America today who want to know if your pastor delivers the message with passion.

They are not interested in seeing us talk about Jesus, sing about Jesus, teach about Jesus or even yet preach about Jesus,

BUT:

I can tell you what every unsaved person in America is waiting for:

They are waiting to see if our walk matches our talk.

If our love and mercy of Him will leave the pews and reach the streets

They are waiting to see if we roll up our sleeves and do ministry the way Jesus did ministry.

JESUS:

Reached out to a lost world, and tried to stop their suffering,

He called us to be His hands to a hurting world.

When is the last time you've reached out to someone in Need? (Family doesn't count on this one.)

When is the last time we've helped an unsaved person, just because Jesus called us to be His hands?

We've sold Easter candy, Krispy Kreme donuts, Pizza, Chicken dinners, and you name it!

We have parked cars in the rain, and had 7 years of drama.

I CHALLENGE YOU TO BE HIS HANDS BEFORE EASTER AND AFTER EASTER.

Reach, touch, help change, help minister to help give of yourself to make a difference in someone's world

N A I L 3:

The third nail reminds us that, since His feet were nailed, He has called us to be His feet.

His feet carried Him from town to town in search of those who needed His love.

He came to seek and save that which was lost.

He has called us to go you therefore and do likewise.

Don't forget that GO is part of Gospel.

Where have your feet taken you?

Have you been to your neighbors house, a co-workers house?

Have they taken us to visit the sick?

Have they taken us to those who have come to church?

We think because we give we don't have to go, that our responsibility stops when the ink dries on the check, HOWEVER, giving is but one aspect of being His feet to a lost world.

Statistically, 95 out of 100 Christians will die without telling someone about Jesus.

67% of people around you don't go to church, their name is on the roll but they don't go to church and when they die they are going to heaven.

2 out of 3 people you saw yesterday at Wal-Mart, Krogers, Giant Eagle and the Mall could be lost without a hope of ever being reached.

Outreach is still a vital part of our church. It is as important as prayer.

Where is our feet taking us? To pleasure, to recreation, to work?

Should not our feet be His feet, going to meet the needs of others by caring and reaching out to them.

George Barna's research poll says that 2/3rd's or 67% of the un-churched do not go to church because they have never been invited.

It's time to take up the cross, follow Him to those who need him

T H E  4 TH  N A I L:

The last nail is to remind us that since the sign proclaimed Him to be King, we are called upon to proclaim Him as the King.

The sign read, "JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS."

The sign was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin so all could read it.

Some complained about the sign to Pilate but Pilate said, "What I have written I have written."

Jesus deserved to be born in a palace instead of a stable.

Jesus deserved a throne instead of a cross.

He is God Almighty, come to earth, robed in flesh.

The 4th nail was to remind us that there is one God and only one God and His name is not Allah, Buddah or Khrishna
……………BUT……….J E S U S !

He is not just a king or the king BUT He is KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS!

Philippians 2
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus has called us to be

  His Hands
  His Feet and to
  Proclaim Him as King!
