Our History

In 1931 Rev. W.T. Poling came to Riverside at the invitation of Rev. H.I. Goodin. Rev. Poling was elected as the Pastor. The first congregation met in a building on Dunkard Ave., across from the Blackshear cleaning stablishment in Westover. At that time it was simply known as the "Mission". The congregation began to grow.

In 1934, the church moved to Western Ave. The congregation continued to grow and it wasn't long until the building became too small. Bro. Poling and the people were praying for the Lord's direction concerning a new church. One evening as he walked along Monongahela Ave., he came to the corner of Monongahela and Ferry Street, the Lord spoke to him and said, "This is the place!" An investigation followed and the owner of the property was contacted. The ground was purchased and work began on the new church. Rev. Poling and the men of the church did most of the work. The Rev. H. C.
Weaver was in charge of the building program. The men and boys worked while the women cooked.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1937, the Riverside Apostolic Church was dedicated. Rev. H. I. Goodin preached the dedicatory sermon. The first revival began on the same night with the Rev. D. J. White of Akron, Ohio as the evangelist.

In 1954 the first Ladies' Auxiliary was formed with Sis. Josephine Kendall as the president and Sis. Ruth Dawson as the Secretary-Treasurer. Sis. Betty Hackney organized the first choir and children's choir. As in the past, God blessed the church with continued growth and something had to be done. The answer was a new addition to the building. Once again the men and women rallied as the lord blessed the work with Rev. Paul Walker in charge. With the addition completed, more space was provided for the expected increase in Riverside's spiritual family.

In December 1961, another chapter in the history of Riverside came to an end. Rev. W.T. Poling passed on to a better land leaving the torch in the hands of Rev. Hayward Saffle. Riverside's heritage continued under his direction and as in the past God's hand was on the church. With Rev. Saffle's announcement of his retirement on December 31, 1974, another chapter came to a close and a new one began.

In September 1977, 22 acres of land on the Dent's Run Boulevard was purchased for $100,000 with tremendous effort on the part of Bro. Norwood Dulin and Bro. Chester Arents. In January 1978, the men of the church went on to the property, with snow to their knees to begin clearing the land. In June 1978, construction began on the new Fellowship Hall; it was to be the temporary home of Riverside. As in the beginning the men worked and the women cooked and provided food. Construction was completed in September 1979 as a combination Church-Fellowship Hall. The first service was held on Sunday morning, September 19, 1979, Homecoming Day.

With God's blessing, the church experienced tremendous growth. On April 2, 1981, just fifty feet (50) from the fellowship hall, the first block was laid for the new church building. Construction was completed in April, 1983 with the first service held on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1983. Words can hardly express the beauty of Riverside's new home. A Dream Come True!!

On August 11, 1985 another chapter would come to a close with the resignation of Bro. Harper. It was during the week of September 22, 1985, that Rev. David M. Hudson ministered to the congregation of Riverside and inspired them with a message of hope. On October 2, 1985, the congregation felt led to elect Rev. David M. Hudson as their new Pastor. On November 22, 1985, Rev. Hudson was officially installed as Pastor of Riverside. A new chapter began for the faithful Saints of Riverside. As God continues to Bless, many souls have found their way to Jesus through the ministry of our beloved Pastor and Family.

The congregation has continued to grow spiritually as well as in number. Under the anointed leadership of Pastor Hudson the Church's financial burden has continued to lighten.

During twentyone years as Pastor at Riverside, Pastor Hudson has led the church administration in seeing the indebtedness of the church mortgage paid in full four years ahead of schedule. Major capitol improvements have been completed under his direction. The paving of the parking area has been a major improvement. New roofs on the existing buildings have been completed.  A complete renovation of the interior of the Fellowship Hall including an up-to-date modern kitchen featuring the latest inventions

Riverside's growth has steadily continued as some 300 conversions during this time have further strengthened the foundation. Numerous activities have added to the exciting ministries at Riverside. Most notable has been the Easter Drama that has been seen by over 10,000 people over passed five years.

There are presently some twenty-five ministries operating at Riverside. Riverside has enlarged their ministries internationally as Pastor Hudson has visited and ministered in some 50 countries.

The past has been glorious. There have been times of great joy and sorrow. Many faithful "warriors" have passed from the scene to their eternal reward.

As the church has grown so has the vision. This vision continues today! We have made our commitment to the city of Morgantown and surrounding communities
